What Would You Say In This Situation?!

Today on the bus there was a 2-seater that opened up, and a big-sized man in front of me moved to sit there. When he saw that I was about to do the same thing but stopped after I saw him about to sit down, he offered the seat to me instead. I told him it was okay, that he could take the seat(s) since he moved first, but he insisted that I take it. When I sat down, taking one of the two seats, I realized that he did not take the remaining empty seat because of his size.

Talk about being a gentleman! I had thanked him, but as the bus rolled on, I asked myself what do I say in a situation like this?

"Hey mister, it's alright. I'm considered small here, and I'm sure we can fit into these 2 seats."

HECK NO!!!

Seriously, what does one say in a situation like this? Thankfully he got off the next stop, so I didn't feel so guilty. I was very touched by that small gestures though. And Mister, whoever you are, even though I already thanked you and you probably thought, "No big deal," I want to say THANK YOU again. You have no idea how much I appreciated it because I just had a CRAZY weekend and was exhausted.

Speaking about CRAZY weekend, I am still trying to recover from it. I slept 9 hours last night but still woke up feeling weary. Nope, I'm not recovering because of party-ing too much but from running around doing school and moving stuff.

I've felt like a headless chicken since last Thursday. In the past 5 days I've:
- Had a meeting with my adviser to discuss this semester
- Survived my first Chinese class "grilling." Language classes are not tough, but they are super time-consuming! And because this class is like an independent reading class, I get "tested" every session, which is bad on my nerves
- Read a book about miscegenation laws in America (miscegenation: interracial marriages are forbidden)
- Attended my Women, Sexuality and Ethnicity class that discussed above-said book
- Helped the missionaries with one of their lessons
- Attended a lunch with Raj Patel (who is better looking and way more charismatic in real life than on his website)
- Attended an IRB instructional meeting at a building that was hard to get to. [IRB is the board that makes sure any test you carry out on human beings is valid and legal. You have to fill out an IRB form, even if you are not conducting human testing and only interviewing people like I am.]
- Met up for dinner with an old roommate of mine and her husband whom I have not seen since 2007! They have a little boy who is such a cutie.

- Had a retreat in Powell for my Christian Graduate Student Alliance that went from Friday night to Saturday evening. I had a good time, but that darn book review due on Monday kept lurking at the back of my mind...
- Church
- Packed, packed, packed
- Slept only 3 hours Sunday night
- MOVED!!! Not just my stuff, but I also helped my future roommate move some of her stuff as well
- Wrote a 9 page book review that took forever (but I got it done!) because a) I'm an extremely slow writer, and b) this book had so many ideas, some I agreed with and some I didn't, and I had to analyze and arranged them, and  read the book again and think how I was going to express myself and... it's a process that is mentally exhausting
- Despair at the messy state my apartment is in now, and figure out which suitcase/ box do I empty out first

Through it all however, I was so blessed to enjoy a couple of FREE MEALS. Thank you God, because I do not know where I would have gotten the energy to cook. Plus a couple of my Church friends volunteered their precious holiday time to come help me move- so touched!

Hope everyone had a great weekend- hopefully not exhausting like mine was!

  1. I'm going to disagree with your statement that "language classes aren't hard"--my language classes are kicking my butt! I have 4 (!) this semester and two other classes (did I tell you that I'm taking Spanish online?) and I'm pretty sure I'm going to drown in all the translations I have to do. :)

  2. Yay for seeing Havalah! I haven't seen a picture of Luke (right?) since he was a baby, so I didn't recognize him. I'm glad your rough week is over!
